Seikan

The training is less formal during the spring and fall Seikan work exchange periods. Residents participate in chanting in the morning, two semi-formal meals a day and zazen meditation in the morning, afternoon and evening. Most time is devoted to work practice, which can range from routine site maintence, to new construction, to kitchen work. Seichu has less of a focus on silence, so there is time to develop interpersonal relationships among other staff members. During Seikan the Mount Baldy Zen Center also provides food and lodging for various outside groups who rent the facilities to conduct seminars, spiritual retreats etc.

The Work Exchange Program is a great introduction to life at the Mount Baldy Zen Center. Students offer their time, skills and effort for the opportunity to live here and participate in Zen Center activities for anywhere from a week to the full three month period. Formal application and an interview is required.
