Kyozan Joshu Sasaki, Roshi

Founder and Abbot of Rinzai-ji

Joshu Roshi

On April 1, 2005 Joshu Roshi turned 98.
As Roshi says, he will be walking his 99th year.
We all are deeply moved and humbled by Roshi's dedication to teaching Zen and to his students.

In April, 2005, Joshu Roshi turned 98. It is also 84 years that Roshi first entered Zen training at Zuiryo-ji in Japan. Despite his advanced age Roshi is teaching continuously with inexhaustible patience. During Mt. Baldy's seichu periods Sasaki Roshi resides at Mt. Baldy Zen Center. During Seikan he travels extensively to teach at other Rinzai-ji centers in the United States and abroad. Please refer to Roshi's schedule to find out where he is teaching.

On July 21, 1962, Kyozan Joshu, Roshi, arrived in the United States at the request of a sitting group in Gardena, California. The first zendo of Rinzai-ji was established in a garage. As interest grew soon Cimarron Zen Center (now Rinzai-ji Zen Center) was purchased. It still is the main temple of Rinzai-ji. In the early seventies Mt. Baldy Zen Center was opened as a monastic style training facility.
